Howmet Aerospace HSC Acid Technician in Hampton, Virginia

Job Summary: The Acid Technician will chemically remove metal and/or contaminants from Titanium castings to prepare them for heat treatment, FPI, and weld repair.

Essential Functions & Job Responsibilities:

  • Ability to read and follow the information on work instructions

  • Record data either manually or by computer as required

  • Remove residual manufacturing contaminants such as dirt, markings, oil, and excess metal from castings

  • Inspect cleaned objects to ensure conformance to both internal and external customer standards

  • Accurately gauge castings using hand-held gauges and digital micrometer to ensure proper removal of metal from castings

  • Load castings on rotator, rack, or in containers and immerse them in chemical and rinsing solutions

  • Maintain consistency of acid and alkaline cleaning solutions by adding chemicals as needed

  • Drain, clean, and refill working tanks

  • Interpret visual acceptance criteria and zone maps in order to correctly gauge and mask casting defects

  • Mask casting surface with a resin material to inhibit removal of metal during chemical milling process

  • Understanding of emergency procedures in case of acid spill

  • Qualified to work in confined spaces and pass Pulmonary test

  • Ability to work in team environments, Solo work and working with all levels management, engineering, and people

  • Willing to participate in continuous improvements initiatives within our process to enhance the work task

  • Demonstrated ability to load any casting onto part fixture and rotator, and to successfully chem mill the casting in accordance with PMS requirements

  • Thorough understanding of tank farm, scrubber, and neutralization system, including ability to diagnose alarms and/or implement corrections to the system

  • Demonstrated ability to neutralize, clean up, and dispose of incidental acid spills

  • Ability and willingness to conduct on-the-job training for new hires

  • Demonstrated ability to perform all departmental procedures and Activity Instructions

  • Must comply with all company attendance policies and guidelines; this includes, but is not limited to, regular attendance and occasional overtime

Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED certificate.

  • This position requires a minimum of 3 months related experience and/or training for a Grade 9 Technician, and 18 experience for Grade 10 Technician.

  • Must be available for all shifts. Must be able to work overtime and weekends as the schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility is required.

  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
