Substation Engineer -- Protections and Controls - Position and Responsibilities As a Protections and Controls Substation Engineer with Middough, you will work as a member of a multi-discipline team on high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects with a strong focus on electrical transmission and distribution substation projects. Projects will encompass electrical systems ranging from 5kV to 138kV utility grade systems. In this role, you will also be responsible for all aspects of design of the substation projects from conceptual design, generation of project deliverable sets, and construction support. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Collect and prepare data and information, perform detailed engineering calculations, and write formal engineering/technical reports. Assist in fieldwork, check installations, and problem-solving activities. Serve as Project Lead (as needed) for select single-discipline projects by estimating work hours, developing scope of work, making staffing recommendations, and checking drawings. Handle multiple projects and clients simultaneously while maintaining a high level of project deliverables quality and adhering to applicable client design standards and industry best practices. Collect and prepare data/information, perform detailed engineering calculations, and write formal engineering/technical reports. Collaborate with teams across multiple disciplines and offices including electrical, civil, structural, mechanical and project management. Develop technical specifications and data sheets, perform technical evaluation of bids, and recommend best value design that meets client requirements for operability, reliability, maintainability, and safety. Perform calculation checking and vendor drawing reviews. Interact with colleagues in other departments and suppliers to obtain pertinent information. Responsible for detailed design for high voltage substation projects through 500kv including: Single Line Diagrams Plan and Elevation Drawings Relay protection and controls design including schematics, wiring and three-line diagrams Prepare above and below grade deliverables Engineering calculations for Station Service Sizing, Voltage Drop, Short Circuit and Lightning Equipment and construction specifications and bills of materials Industry codes and standards including the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC), NEMA, ANSI and IEEE standards Leadership in performing engineering design services using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) Software Apply engineering application software to complete engineering tasks such as determining equipment ratings, sizing equipment per project requirements, CT burden calculations, AC station service load calculations, DC battery sizing calculations, and voltage drop calculation Education, Experience and Skills The successful candidate will possess the following: Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline required. 5+ years of experience performing basic engineering analysis and design functions. EIT or PE certification preferred. Experience with power distribution systems, motor control systems, variable frequency drives, short circuit calculations, and relay coordination. High voltage substation design experience greater than 34.5kv as well as protection and relaying design. Working knowledge of utility substation design methods and application. Hands-on experience with electrical design using Autodesk, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation. Hands-on experience with SKM and/or ETAP electrical modeling software is preferred. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail abilities.
